More Than Just Snoring: Why Sleep Apnea Testing Could Save Your Life
Snoring might be the punchline of a family joke or something your partner complains about in the morning. But when loud, persistent snoring is accompanied by gasping, choking, daytime exhaustion, or pauses in breathing, it could point to something more serious: sleep apnea.
At Stat Care Pulmonary and Sleep in St. Petersburg, Florida, sleep specialists Ashok Tyagi, DO, CPE, and Himanshu Chandarana, MD, offer comprehensive sleep testing to identify sleep apnea and other disorders.
Here’s why getting tested could be one of the most important things you do for your health.
Sleep apnea does more than disrupt your sleep
Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that causes breathing to stop and restart repeatedly while you sleep. Without diagnosis and treatment, these nightly interruptions can affect more than your ability to get a good night’s rest. In time, they may contribute to serious health complications.
Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the muscles and tissues in your throat relax enough to block your airway during sleep. With central sleep apnea, your brain doesn’t properly signal the muscles responsible for breathing. Some people experience features of both types.
Regardless of the cause, repeated breathing disruptions can interfere with restorative sleep and affect oxygen levels.
You may wake up repeatedly without realizing it, leaving you exhausted even after 7-8 hours in bed. Over time, untreated sleep apnea can also increase your risk of health problems such as:
- High blood pressure
- Heart disease
- Irregular heart rhythms
- Stroke
- Type 2 diabetes
That’s why recognizing the warning signs matters.
Know the symptoms beyond snoring
Loud snoring is one of the best-known signs of sleep apnea, but it isn’t the only one.
You might wake up gasping for air or frequently experience a dry mouth or morning headache. During the day, you may struggle with persistent sleepiness, irritability, or difficulty focusing.
Sometimes, another person notices the problem first. Your partner may see or hear pauses in your breathing followed by choking, gasping, or loud snoring.
If these symptoms sound familiar, simply going to bed earlier may not solve the problem. Sleep testing can provide a clearer picture of what’s happening while you sleep.
How sleep apnea testing works
At Stat Care Pulmonary and Sleep, you may be able to complete your initial sleep test from the comfort of your own bed.
An at-home sleep study uses portable equipment and sensors to collect information about functions such as breathing, heart rate, and blood oxygen levels while you sleep. Afterward, our sleep specialists review the results to look for signs of sleep apnea.
If an at-home study doesn’t provide enough information, we may recommend an in-lab sleep study, or polysomnography.
During an in-lab study, advanced equipment records information such as your brain waves, heart rate, breathing patterns, oxygen levels, and eye and limb movements. This more comprehensive monitoring can diagnose sleep apnea and other sleep disorders.
Diagnosis opens the door to treatment
Treatment depends on the type and severity of your sleep apnea as well as your health needs. Lifestyle and sleep habit changes may help with mild symptoms. Some people benefit from an oral appliance that positions the jaw to help keep the airway open.
We may also recommend continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. CPAP uses gentle air pressure delivered through a mask to help prevent your airway from closing while you sleep.
The right treatment can help you sleep more soundly while reducing the health risks associated with untreated sleep apnea.
